Supervisors Accepting New Students for Fall 2024 Admission

For Master’s Thesis, PhD Thesis, and PhD dual degree programs, students require a supervisor. Applicants should contact potential supervisors prior to applying to the program. Applicants with a secured supervisors are reviewed more favourably by the admissions committee.

If applicants are unable to secure a supervisor, an application submitted to the program will still be accepted. Applicants without a secured supervisors can list up to 3 proposed supervisors.

Dr. Luciana Macedo is looking for a MSc or PhD student with interest in musculoskeletal pain and implementation science.

Dr. Kho is looking for a PhD student for Winter 2024 or Fall 2024.

Dr. Michelle Kho is an Associate Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. As a clinician-scientist, she also cares for patients in the St. Joseph’s Healthcare ICU in Hamilton. She holds a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Critical Care Rehabilitation and Knowledge Translation from 2013-2023.

Dr. Kho is leading a clinical research program of very early in-bed cycling in mechanically ventilated patients to improve patient outcomes. Her research interests include novel early rehabilitation strategies to reduce weakness in ICU patients, knowledge translation, research methodology (systematic reviews, practice guidelines), and health services and outcomes research.

Dr. Michelle Phoenix is looking for a PhD student for Winter 2024.

Michelle Phoenix is an Assistant Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. She is a speech-language pathologist who studies models of service delivery, family-centred care, access and equity in service delivery and child, youth and family engagement in research. Dr. Evelyne Durocher is looking for a Master or Doctoral student for Fall 2024.

Dr. Durocher is an Occupational Therapist and Assistant Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science. After graduating with her Master’s in Occupational Therapy from the University of Manitoba, Dr. Durocher worked with older adults in inpatient rehabilitation and complex continuing care. Through these experiences, she became particularly attuned to ethical complexities inherent in health and social care, and more specifically in older adult health care and social services.

Dr. Durocher’s program of research is focused on questions of occupation, autonomy, vulnerability, equity, justice, risk and safety in relation to health and social services with older adults. In her work she examines misalignments between perspectives and mandates, and the implications of these for various stakeholders. She hopes to contribute to improving the lives as well as the health and social care experiences of older adults, their family members and healthcare professionals alike.

Dr. Durocher is also interested in ethical questions in practice in countries in the global south such as Rwanda.

Dr. Jenna Smith-Turchyn is accepting one MSc or PhD student to the McMaster Oncology Rehab+ lab in Fall 2024. Research work of the student will focus on physical activity/exercise and its affects during and after cancer treatment as well as implementation science. Previous research experience and/or work experience in the area of physiotherapy, kinesiology, or exercise is an asset. Dr. Marla Beauchamp is looking for 1-2 Masters and/or PhD students for Fall 2024 who have an interest in mobility, technology and aging.

Dr. Marla Beauchamp is a physical therapist and Associate Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences, and an Associate Member in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University. She is also the inaugural Associate Scientific Director of the MIRA | Dixon Hall Centre in Toronto. Dr. Beauchamp holds a tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Mobility, Aging and Chronic Disease and an Early Researcher Award from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities focusing on mobility and technology.

The overarching aim of Dr. Beauchamp’s research is to identify ways to keep older adults mobile and healthy in their homes and communities for as long as possible. She is leading several major interdisciplinary projects on fall risk assessment and prevention, wearable technology for mobility monitoring, and studies on recovery after COVID-19 and respiratory infection. Her ongoing work is funded by CIHR, AGE-WELL, and the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging.
